ABOUT THIS COURSE
If you've ever been daunted by the idea of making a patchwork quilt, or if you're seeking to enhance your patchwork skills or learn new techniques, the Ruskington Ribbon Sampler quilt is designed specifically with you in mind.
In contrast to a single block quilt, where the same block is made repeatedly, or a traditional sampler quilt, with each block being unique, the Ruskington Ribbon Sampler quilt is a 'row by row' or 'band quilt' as it's sometimes called. This approach offers the best of both worlds, allowing you to refine a technique through repetition, thereby increasing your confidence before progressing to a new row and challenge. However, there's no rush; you can proceed with this course entirely at your own pace.
This course provides a detailed and comprehensive PDF pattern featuring clear, step-by-step written instructions and full-size appliqué templates. Additionally, you will have access to video tutorials in which I demonstrate sewing techniques for each block. I will guide you through every stage, and the great news is that you can view these tutorials repeatedly, as often as you wish.
LEARN THE FUNDAMENTALS
In this comprehensive course, you will acquire the fundamental patchwork and quilting skills necessary to embark on your quilting journey. The course includes 16 brand new videos, each ranging from a few minutes up to 24 minutes in length. In the first section these will cover essential techniques such as achieving a perfect 1/4" seam allowance and the safe use of a rotary cutter. I will also introduce you to my indispensable list of quilting tools and notions that I use all the time.
Next, you will learn to sew the blocks required for each row. These include Needle Turn appliqué and English Paper Piecing, two of my favourite hand sewing methods. I will walk you through through every part of these wonderful techniques. I will also show you how to machine piece traditional quilt blocks, each with a distinctive Pretty Fabrics and Trims twist.
Upon completing your quilt top, I will share my 'little happy' tips for how I hand quilted my Ruskington Ribbon Sampler quilt. However, if hand quilting isn't for you, feel free to choose to machine quilt or send your quilt to be professionally long arm quilted.
Finally, you will learn how to attach the quilt binding.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES
Please remember, I firmly believe in selecting a technique that brings you joy. For instance, if needle turn appliqué doesn't appeal to you, that's perfectly okay. You might consider trying the interfacing appliqué method or raw edge appliqué instead. Rest assured, I have tutorials for these methods as well! These, along with many others (including the essential 'how to layer your quilt top with wadding and backing fabric PDF guide), are included in my complimentary 'Beginners Guide to Patchwork' course, which I have conveniently also added to the Ruskington Ribbon Sampler quilt curriculum, ensuring that everything is all together in one place for you!
Quilting and sewing become even more delightful when shared with friends, both old and new. That's why you will be invited to join the brand new 'Community' page for Pretty Fabrics and Trims. Here, you can share your blocks and progress, seek assistance when needed, and connect with fellow happy stitchers. We know from having met so many of you over the years, that you are a friendly, supportive and generous group! Plus, remember that I am just an email away for any specific questions or support you might need....I'm here to assist you every step of the way.
If you would like to make a quilt identical to mine, we have curated a beautiful Ruskington Ribbon Sampler Quilt Supplies Pack, which is available on our Pretty Fabrics and Trims website. This pack contains all the exquisite Liberty Tana Lawn™ and background fabric needed for the quilt top, as well all the EPP papers.
YOUR TUTOR
Hello, my name is Sarah Edgar. I’m a Happy Stitcher and co-owner of our family business Pretty Fabrics & Trims, founded in 2012. I design all our Block of the Month Clubs, Kits & Patterns.
Sewing has always been an important part of my life...it brings me great happiness and joy. I can honestly say that not many days pass by without at some point, a needle and thread being held in my hand. More importantly, in an increasingly pressurised world, the sense of wellbeing and calmness that I feel when sewing is priceless.
I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by piles of pretty fabrics and being taught timeless needlework skills by my mum (Penny) and nanny (Flo). It's no surprise that with their encouragement, I started sewing at an early age, making clothes and pretty quilts for my dolls as soon as I could thread a needle. I haven't stopped sewing since. Sewing is my passion and I love nothing better than spending my evenings and weekends with an English Paper Piecing, needle turn applique or a hand embroidery project on my lap.
I look forward to sharing my love of sewing with you and if at any time you have any questions, please do get in touch and I will do all that I can to help.
